Obituary

Francis “Frank” R. Germain

Francis R. Germain, age 81, of Tyngsborough, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2022, at his home with his wife and children by his side.

Loving husband, devoted father, proud grampy, uncle and a wonderful friend and colleague to so many, he will be sorely missed by all.

Born in Worcester on July 1, 1941, he was the son of the late Francis and Gertrude (Johnson) Germain and step-son of the late Warren Taft Scally.  He was a graduate of Worcester High School and continued to earn his bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Worcester Polytech Institute.

Frank served his country and was a proud veteran of the U. S. Air Force, following his active duty he joined the Air Force Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1977, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

After returning from the service, he began his extensive engineering career, working for several government agencies including his most memorable experience working at Waltham based EG&G. In his time at EG&G he had opportunities that took him on adventures all around the world. He had the privilege of rubbing elbows with the likes of Jacques Cousteau and his greatest and most respected engineering mentor,  Harold “Doc” Edgerton. One of his most notable professional accomplishments was his contributions to the side scan sonar technology. The same sonar that was used to help search for the Spanish Galleons and locate and recover the Black box of the Space Shuttle Challenger and is still in use today.

In his younger years, he enjoyed skiing and was a member of the Skedaddlers ski club in North Conway, NH where he eventually met a stunning blond from the rival Wedlen Ski Club and immediately began their whirlwind romance that would last the next 50 years. He also enjoyed playing tennis, aviation, intense chess matches and of course, a good martini.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Virginia “Gini” A. (Johnson) Germain,  his son, Christopher F. Germain of Berwick, ME; daughter and son-in-law, Heather Lyn and Geoffrey Duval of Tewksbury; two grandchildren, Andrew and Cameron Duval; his sister and brother-in-law Sandra and William Tate of Hiram, ME; his sister Judy Russo of West Boylston; brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Kathy Scally of Holden, MA; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard “Bud” and Mary Beth Johnson of Brewster, MA, Philip (Pep) and Marie Johnson of Harwich, MA, Paul and Diane Johnson of Billerica and Marilyn Center of Saugus, MA; and his many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend services at the TYNGSBOROUGH FUNERAL HOME, 4 Cassaway Drive, Tyngsborough, on Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 12 pm – 2 pm. His Funeral Service will take place immediately following in the Funeral Home at 2 pm.
