Thomas Eugene Paul Sarantakis
September 1968- January 2020
Thomas E. P. Sarantakis, age 51, a lifelong resident of Lowell, passed away the evening of Thursday, January 9, 2020, after an illness at Westford House Nursing facility.
Born in Lowell on September 22, 1968, he was the son of the late James Sarantakis and Jacqueline Veillette.
Thomas had a deep passion for all things Lowell—from Mill City Grows gardening to advocacy for accessibility on the streets and sidewalks throughout Lowell. Thomas was frequently seen driving his wheelchair throughout Lowell, shopping at local businesses to get to know people, and spending time in the downtown area with friends. He was proud to be a Lowell resident and enjoyed working to make Lowell accessible to all.
Thomas will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, his sense of humor, his devotion to his family and friends. Thomas inspired those around him to challenge their preconceptions about disabilities, to give others the benefit of a doubt, to fight for their convictions. His strength of character and desire to make a difference, no matter how small, was imparted to his daughter, Samantha, a high school teacher, who strives to advocate and be a voice for her students.
He is survived by his daughter, Samantha Sarantakis, of Taunton, MA; two brothers, James and Nicholas Sarantakis, and two sisters, Jacqueline Garland and Virginia Sarantakis; several nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles, Norma Veillette, Bruce Veillette, William Veillette, and Jean-Paul Veillette.
